Hidden Treasures

The Bible is much more than a book of religion.

Don’t!

Don’t! Don’t you just hate that word? No one enjoys being told what he can or cannot do. But it’s a word we have lived with ever since we were tiny tots. Some small children who have not yet learned from their parents that NO means NO, will break into a tantrum, lie on the floor and kick and screamif they hear that word NO. Some adults are just as childish when they kick their tantrums also.

It’s true that some parents unwisely overuse that word for trying to control every detail of their child’s life; even prohibiting things that don’t matter. It would be wiser for parents to increase their use of positive reinforcement by encouraging children when they do right, and limit the use of DON’T to only important matters of right and wrong and matters of safety.

We are surrounded by laws given to us as negatives.

NO PARKING, NO ADMITTANCE,  NO TRESPASSING, NO SPEEDING, NO TURNING, NO STOPPING, NO SOLICITING NO U TURNS, NO JAY WALKING, NO LOITERING, NO WALKING ON THE GRASS, NO FEEDING THE ANIMALS, NO FISHING, NO HUNTING, NO DUMPING, NO SWIMMING, NO DIVING, NO TALKING, NO SMOKING, NO FIRES, NO RUNNING, TURN OFF CELL PHONES, DO NOT TOUCH, DO NOT ENTER. Most negative laws are given for our own good and safety and for the safety and comfort of others. If we ignore or break these laws, we are liable to be fined, imprisoned or at least reprimanded. Disobeying some of these prohibitions could even lead to our harm or death or to the death of others.

Don’t! None of us like it, but we might as well get used to it. As long as we are alive on this earth, we have to face prohibitions; not only from others, but more importantly, from God. Himself.

God gave us a list of DON’Ts in His ten commandments.

1. Don’t have other gods before Me.

2. Don’t make graven images and bow down to them.

3. Don’t take the name of God in vain.

4. Don’t defile the Sabbath Day by working.

5. Don’t dishonor your parents.

6. Don’t commit murder.

7. Don’t commit adultery.

8. Don’t steal.

9. Don’t bear false witness against another.

10. Don’t covet anything.

God’s solution to our law breaking.

Evidently God is not concerned about warping our personalities with His Prohibitions. Actually, God is very serious about His commands. In fact, to break any of these laws means we are guilty. Rom. 3:19 Not only are we guilty, but every one who breaks God’s Law, must die. All of us are guilty, so all of us must die! ” For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23 “The wages of sin is death.” Rom. 6:23

Thank God, that there is a way out. God in love to us, has given His Son Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus paid the death penalty for our law breaking. Those who receive Jesus as their Saviour are freed from guilt and death. Not only are we freed from the penalty of sin, but we are given the gift of eternal life. But more than that, we are given the very nature of God to love what He loves and hate what He hates.

Have you come to that moment in your life when you stand convicted and guilty before God? Will you reach out by faith and receive Christ as your Saviour? He will save you from your guilt and give you a love for His prohibitions. Those DON’Ts will no longer irk you, but comfort and bless you as you see them as God’s loving arms of protection around you.
