Hidden Treasures

The Bible is much more than a book of religion.

Declaration of Independence series #1

Whereas the Spanish explorers first came to our Southwest and to places such as what became St. Augustine, Florida over 500 years ago in search of gold and also to extend the Roman Catholic Church into these regions;  it was not until one hundred years later that the Pilgrims from England came to our eastern shores seeking to establish a new life for themselves, free from the repressive power and persecution of the spiritually dead  State Church.

Jamestown Colony in 1607  and Plymouth Colony in 1620 were but two of many colonies that were founded by the English colonists up and down the Eastern seaboard of what is now the United States of America.   It took about 150 years of oppressive regulation and taxation of England to bring these pioneers to the point of rebelling against this oppression and declaring their independence from England by writing and signing the all-important document,  our Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776.

The signers of this awesome document came from all thirteen of our original colonies, including John Hancock from Massachusetts, the only one who signed it on July 4th. He  scrawled his name across the bottom of the document “largely and clearly so King George III could read it without his spectacles”.  The other 56 delegates to that Continental Congress added their signatures on August 2nd.

The signers were all men of means and educated: including lawyers, jurists, merchants, farmers and large plantation owners.  What a price those brave men paid for their signatures, knowing full well they would face death if captured!  Their fate is well known and recorded by many.

Five were captured by the British as traitors and tortured to death.  Many had their homes ransacked and burned.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships destroyed. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died a pauper.

Thomas McKean of Delaware was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and he died in poverty.

Vandals looted the properties of Ellery of Rhode Island, Clymer of Pennsylvania, Hall of Georgia, Walton of Georgia, Gwinnett of Georgia, Heyward of South Carolina, Ruttledge of South Carolina, and Middleton of South Carolina.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr., of Virginia, knowing that the British General Cornwallis had taken over his home for his headquarters urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis of New York lost his home and properties. His wife was jailed and she died within a few months.

John Hart of New Jersey was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his grist mill were destroyed. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Lewis Morris of New York and Philip Livingston of New York suffered similar fates.

Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were among prominent Americans well known in England. Yet both signed enthusiastically knowing they would be hanged if caught. Jefferson risked Monticello and Franklin his wealth and world prestige if independence was not secured.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more than security. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged:

“For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Where are such men of honor and principle to be found today?  No wonder America became a great nation and has been blessed beyond measure by Almighty God!

Can America endure much longer when the God who gave us our freedom is being mocked in the class room  and His Word is being driven out of our national life and the Christianity upon which we were founded is bring replaced by the false religions of “liberalism”, “multiculturalism” and “political correctness”?

For a definition and explanation of liberalism, see my article on this topic on this web site.

# 2: Satan’s Declaration of Independence

A declaration of independence can be good or bad.  For our founding fathers and for America is was good.  As great and as earth shaking as that declaration was, there have been three other declarations of independence that have had an even great repercussion on us and on our world.

The first was Satan’s Declaration of Independence from God which is recorded in Isaiah 14:12-19  and Ezekiel 28:11-19.  Satan was perhaps the first of God’s creation, Lucifer, a glorious, beautiful cherub whose life was devoted to glorifying God’s holiness and majesty. (Cherub is singular and cherubim is plural.)

The time came when Lucifer was not satisfied with his exalted position in Heaven.  He rose up in rebellion towards God and God cast him out of Heaven.  He could have instantly destroyed him, but in God’s wisdom, omniscience and sovereignty, He chose to allow Satan (formerly Lucifer)  freedom to carry out his enmity towards God on this earth that He created.

Though there are myriads of angels, it is my observation that there are only four cherubim  now.  Lucifer had been the first of five cherubim. Now that Lucifer has been banished from that position, Revelation 4 and 5 speak of four living creatures (cherubim)  In Revelation 4 they glorify God the creator and in the 5th chapter they glorify God (The Lord Jesus Christ) as our Saviour.

Tracing cherubim through the Old Testament, we find them first in Genesis 3:24 guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden to keep sinful man from ever returning.

In the Book of Exodus we see images of the cherubim embroidered into the heavy veil that separated sinful men from the Holy of Holies where God was present with His people, Israel.  We also see golden images of cherubim hovered over the Ark of the Covenant, symbolically guarding this holy place behind the veil.

In Ezekiel 1 we see a description of cherubim that defies our ability to fully comprehend.

Satan is in the world today leading fallen mankind to continue his revolt against God.  Every person on the face of this earth is either surrendered to God or in revolt against God. If they are revolting against God, it is certain they are not free; but rather slave to Satan.

Satan and those who revolt with him against God will eventually be cast alive into the eternal Lake of Fire as is taught in Revelation 20:10-15

We are most like our first spiritual father, Satan when we are proud, rebellious and hateful.  We who are born again through faith in Christ are most like our Heavenly Father when we are holy, humble and loving.

#3: Man’s Declaration of Independence from God

No sooner had Satan declared his independence from God and was banished from Heaven, when he appeared on God’s newly created earth in the Garden of Eden.  He indwelt a serpent and approached Eve with the temptation to join him in his rebellion by disobeying God in the matter of eating fruit from the forbidden tree in the midst of the Garden.

Adam and Eve together joined Satan in his rebellion towards God as it is described in Genesis 3.   As children of Adam and Eve, the entire human race has inherited Adam’s sinful nature and we are all born sinners. Read Romans 5 concerning this truth. It doesn’t take long for that rebellion to reveal itself in our sinful human nature.  Isaiah 53:6 testifies to us that we are all as sheep that have gone astray. We’ve all gone our own ways, thinking we were free, when in reality, we are slaves of Satan.

Every man thinks he is free to do his own thing.  In reality, there are only two super powers in the world:  God and Satan.  Though sinners refuse to believe they are in bondage to Satan, the fact is, they are.

The Pharisees in Jesus day, refused to believe they were in bondage to Satan. Read their conversation with Jesus about this in John 8:31-45  It’s amazing how they boasted that they had never been in bondage to anyone, when in reality they had been in bondage in Egypt for 400 years  and in Babylon for 70 years  and now they were slaves of the Roman Empire.

No sinner is free.  As a slave of Satan, he can only sin.  It’s only when one has put his trust in Christ as Saviour and Lord that he discovers true freedom for the first time in his life.  Speaking of Himself in John 8:36  He said to them and to us, “If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed!”  Have you cast yourself on Christ and found that true freedom.

#4 Our Independence from Satan

Because God is perfectly righteous and holy and sinners cannot be in His presence,  and  because we were born slaves of Satan, lost and condemned to hell. God had a right to forget the human race and let them go to hell.  He would have been just in doing that.

But God is more than just and righteous.  He is also loving and gracious. Because of His love and grace, He devised an amazing plan of salvation that only He could have ever planned. God intervened on our behalf and did what we could not have ever done for ourselves in a million years.   He solved the sin problem by coming down to this earth in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s Son.  He allowed Christ to take the curse of sin for us in His own body on the cross.

Those who come as guilty, lost, helpless sinners to God and trust in Christ’s sacrifice for their sins, are instantly declared righteous.  Read carefully Romans 3-5 concerning this life and death matter.

The good news is that if you put your trust in Christ, He removes the curse of sin from you and counts you as righteous as Jesus Himself, making you fit to dwell in His presence in Heaven forever.  Read I John 5:11-13 about this certainty.

Not only does He justify you, declaring you perfect in Christ; but He also breaks Satan’s stranglehold on you, delivering you from his wicked kingdom and translates you into the Kingdom of His dear Son.  Read Colossians 1:13 about this.  As Jesus said in John 8:36, “If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed!”

If you have received Christ as your Saviour, don’t you think it would right for you to bow before Him and invite Him to be Lord of your life?  That’s what the grateful slave who had a loving master did when he had a right to go free.  Read about it in Exodus 21:5-6 He went to the door post and allowed an awl  to be driven through his ear lobe and with that act, he surrendered to his loving master for the rest of his life.

Have you made that surrender to Christ?  Have you declared your independence from Satan through the merits of Jesus’ shed blood and have you surrendered voluntarily to Christ as Master and Lord of your life?

#5: Caution

Some Americans take their freedom to extremes and go and live in a commune or compound out in the wilderness totally independent of fellow Americans.  Their attitude is, “I have my guns and provisions.  I have no need of anyone or anything.  I refuse to pay taxes. No one tells me what to do.”  Such people are dangerous and un-American.

So there are Christians who carry their freedom to extremes. “No one tells me what to do. I have my freedom in Christ! I am answerable  to no one!”  Such people reject being accountable to anyone. They reject being involved in a Bible preaching church. They reject Bible preachers and even the authority of the Bible itself.

What if the framers of our US Constitution had refused to come together and seek God’s wisdom for the framing of our Constitution?  We would have no union today.  We would just be a group of independent, autonomous colonies. In fact, we probably would have been conquered by some world power.

What if the early Church had not come together under the submission of the Apostle’s Doctrine as given to us in the inspired Scriptures?  The Church would have had no foundation and would be non-existent today.

Thank God for our freedom from condemnation and from the power of Satan through Christ. Thank God also for His Church, purchased with His shed blood and under His sovereign Lordship. Thank God for His inspired, infallible Word that teaches us not only how to be saved, but how to live as Christians. Thank God for the inter-dependence we can enjoy as fellow Christians in order to grow and be useful Christians.

I trust you can say, “Thank God, Jesus has freed me from Satan and from the power and penalty of sin.  I love my Master.  I will not go free.  I will obey His Word and joyfully serve Him all my life.”

Fathers: Are All the Children In?

Recently I shared this Father’s Day message with our church.  My desire is to help you  grasp the world situation in which Noah raised his three sons and thus help you raise your children in our present sinful world.

Boring dates?  Not at all!

Let me start by giving you some pertinent and interesting  genealogical figures. The dates I give you are not BC nor AD.  We’re going to refer to the years as following the day of Creation which date is 0.

Adam was created in the year 0 and died 930 years later, as we read in  Genesis 5:5.  Adam and Eve were created as full grown adults and placed in the beautiful Garden of Eden untouched by sin. They were given the command in Genesis 1:28 to “be fruitful and multiply”. Cain and Abel, their first two sons, were born after the Fall and after they had been cast out of the Garden of Eden.   So it is probable that the Fall took place within a few months of creation.

Seth, a third son of Adam and Eve was born when Adam was 130 years old, Genesis  5:3 tells us.   From the line of Seth came the Antediluvian patriarchs listed in Genesis 5.  They each lived almost 1,000 years and had their children at well over the age of 100.

Enoch, the seventh from Adam, was born 622 years after the day of creation.  Jude 14-15 informs us that he was a preacher of righteousness and he walked with God.  At the age of 365, or in the 987th year from creation, an amazing thing happened to him.  He did not die, but was simply “raptured” into Heaven.

This is just a foretaste of what is going to take place any moment when all Christians are raptured or caught up to Heaven without dying, as is taught in I Corinthians 15:51-58  and I Thessalonians 4:13-18, as well as several other Scriptures.    See my prophecy series for more information concerning the Rapture.

Noah was born in the year 1056 from creation as you can easily calculate from Genesis 5.  His three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth were born after Noah was 500 years old.  One hundred years later according to Genesis 7:6 the Flood took place in the year 1656 from creation when Noah was 600 years old.

Keeping in mind that most of these patriarchs lived close to 1000 years and had many sons and daughters, it is not difficult to believe that in these 1656 years from creation  the world population had risen to well over one billion and they were spread all over the face of the earth.  Keep in mind that although there were oceans, the land mass was connected throughout the earth and did not look at all like the shape of continents today.  Also the mountains were not nearly as high and the oceans basins were not nearly as deep as they have been since the Flood of Noah’s day.  For much more on the geological affects of the Flood,  get hold of John Whitcomb’s book on The Genesis Flood  written about fifty years ago. This scholarly book was the forerunner of the modern Creation movement that blasts holes in the evolutionary theories being taught as scientific  fact in public schools.  Check out the following interesting and  informative  web site http://www.answersingenesis.org/

By the time of the Flood, all the godly patriarchs had died and Enoch was raptured. According to Genesis 6:1-13  there were intellectual and perhaps physical giants in the human race, but the awful fact is that there remained not one single godly person on the face of the earth, except for Noah and his wife and their three sons and their wives; a grand total of eight people!    All the rest of these perhaps billion people had turned their backs on God.  The reason for this mess is that godly people had married ungodly people and thus filled the earth with sin and violence. That’s still the dreadful consequence of Christians marrying non Christians today.

This was the world situation in which Noah raised his three sons. Amazingly, he lived such a consistently righteous life that his family followed him in their love and devotion and obedience to God.   Of all the fathers that have lived on the face of the earth, Noah is a supreme example in the Bible of the power and influence of a godly father.

The Judgment That Fell on this earth over 4300 years ago

The Flood that came in Noah’s day, described in Genesis 7-8, and referred to by Jesus in Matthew 24:37-39 and by Peter in both of his epistles, covered the earth to a depth of over 22 feet over the highest mountains, according to Genesis 7:20. Remember, prior to the Flood, mountains were not nearly as high as they are today and ocean basins were not dearly as deep.  Those geological changes took place as the flood was receding. The Grand Canyon in northern Arizona is a wonderful testimony to the Flood.

The Flood  instantly killed and buried under tons of rock and earth the bodies of  men and animals and birds so that they fossilized and we can find those fossils throughout the earth today.  They are constantly being discovered by geologists.

The only living creatures who survived the flood were Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives and the birds and animals within the ark.  All other living creatures died.

It was not a local flood as unbelievers would teach.  In Genesis  6-9 at least thirty times God makes clear that all living creatures died.   Three times in those chapters God promised He would never send another universal flood to the earth. If the flood of Noah’s day was a localized flood, as liberals teach; then God has lied every time local floods have killed people down through the centuries.

How were Noah and his family saved?

Genesis 6:8 tells us they were saved by God’s grace, just as we are saved by God’s grace according to  Ephesians 2:8-9 and according to the doctrine of salvation as taught in Romans.

Hebrews 11:7 also teaches us that Noah was saved by faith in God.  God warned him of the Flood and commanded him to build the ark according to His specifications.  Noah obeyed God and was saved.

So the Bible teaches that we are saved by the grace of God and through faith in Him. Consider Noah’s faith in God.  God told him he would send a world-wide flood that would destroy mankind. Up to that time there had never even been a rain storm on the earth. Genesis 2:6 teaches us that the earth was watered by dew each day.  Can you imagine the joke Noah was to all his contemporaries;  building an ark for a Flood?  What was a Flood?  Noah and his three sons worked on this gigantic ark, the size of over 400 railroad stock cars.

Why did his three sons believe him?  It was his godly, consistent life of obedience to God that caused them to endure all the scorn of the world and keep building. Read of Noah’s life in Genesis 6:9, 7:1 and Hebrews 11:7.   I expect that for 100 years Noah became famous throughout the world as “the fool who was preparing the ark to protect his family from a coming flood.”  No doubt, people traveled for miles to come and see this  “weird character and his monstrosity”.  Hebrews 11:7 tells us that he condemned the world by this act of obedience to God.

How are we saved today?

Noah’s ark was a type of Christ.  Christ is our Ark today.  We can do nothing to prepare the ark.  It is finished.   To be saved, we must enter the ark in this age of God’s grace. We enter the ark of Christ by believing that His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead three days later provided the full atonement for our sins.  We cannot add any works to His finished work.  We simply come to Him and trust Him.

Listen to the COMES of the Bible.

The first come is found in Genesis 7:1  And the Lord said to Noah, Come thou and all thy household into the ark, for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this generation.”

In Isaiah 1:18 God invites us to come and reason together with Him. Though our sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

In John 6:37 Jesus teaches, “All that the Father gives to Me shall come to Me, and him that cometh unto Me I will in no wise cast out.”  The  first part of that verse has to do with the sovereignty of God.  That is good to know, but not necessary for us to fully understand or explain.  It’s God’s business.  The promise for you and me is that anyone who will come to Jesus for salvation, He will not refuse.   So you can’t blame God if you go to hell.

John 5:40 makes it clear that there is only one reason people reject Jesus.  It’s their own decision to reject Him.  Jesus says, “Ye WILL NOT come to Me that ye might have life.”  How do you receive eternal life?  By coming to Jesus in faith and believing that He died for your sins.

A final come is found in Revelation 22:17.  There we learn there are two persons who are seeking to win you to Christ:  the Spirit of God and His Bride.  I, as a born again Christian, am part of the Bride of Christ.  I implore you to come to Jesus today and receive God’s gift of eternal life.  As you read this article, not only are you hearing my invitation, but the Spirit of God is at work in your heart convicting you and convincing you of your sins and of the Truth of His Word.   Are you going to go on rejecting Him until one day God shuts the door of the ark?

God Shut the Door!

Note finally, that God shut the door of the ark.  I’m glad Noah was not commanded to do that.  I’m glad I am not commanded to shut the door of salvation. That would be a greater responsibility than I or anyone could bear.  Only God shuts the door of salvation.

Once the door was shut and the rains began, it was too late for anyone to try to gain entrance to the ark.  Once God shuts the door of salvation for you by your death or by the rapture of the Church,  it will be too late for you to be saved.  II Thessalonians 2:11-12 warns that all those who rejected the truth in this church age will be deceived by the Anti-Christ during the Tribulation.

I beseech you to come to Christ today while the Spirit and the Bride are saying  Come.

Legalism

“Legalism” is one of those emotionally-charged words that is often hurled at our church and other Bible churches and institutions  by Christians who should know better.

If you have read very much of this web site, you already know that we preach salvation through faith in God’s gracious gift of His Son on Calvary‘s cross. We do not believe nor preach that anything we do as Christians adds to our salvation or makes us worthy of God’s grace.

Grace is foundational to our salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-9 states “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.” God demands His perfection if we would enter Heaven. Jesus  summarized and concluded His Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7 with this command. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect.” Matthew 7:48  The only perfection we have is God’s righteousness which is imputed to us (put to our account) when we trust Christ for salvation.  That righteousness is given to us through God’s act of justification. The truth of justification is taught in Romans 3-5.

In II Corinthians 5:21 the doctrine of justification is clearly summarized.  Follow along in your Bible as I paraphrase and amplify it.  ” For God the Father gave His perfect sinless Son, Jesus,  to shed His blood and die on the cross to bear all of our sins, paying the full penalty for them. He rose  again the third day so that through faith in Him we could be declared and made perfectly righteous, even as righteous as God Himself, and thus fit to live with Him in Heaven forever.”

Paul was a legalist until He met Christ on the Road to Damascus and was radically changed.  Read Paul’s testimony of his legalism in Philippians 3:4-6    Then read of the change that Jesus made in his life in the following verses 7-15.  As a Christian, he poured contempt on all his past efforts to attain righteousness and described it all as manure. When Paul received Christ, he ceased being a legalist.  So should every Christian.

Grace teaches us how to live the Christian life.

When we receive Christ as Saviour,  that is only the beginning of our Christian life. From that point on the grace of God takes on a new role.  It teaches us how to live a godly, holy life. Follow along in your Bible as we read Titus 2:11-15  “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldy lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world; looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour, Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto Himself a peculiar people (a people for His own possession) , zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”

From those verses we learn that a preacher’s work is not only to preach the Gospel of the grace of God,  but also teach Christian how to live according to the Bible, which is God’s Word.   II Timothy 3:16-17 shows us that all Scripture (from Genesis through The Revelation)  is given by inspiration of God and all of it is profitable to teach doctrine, to expose our sins,  to correct us and instruct is in living  the Christian  life.

So when we expose sin and teach Christians how to live victoriously and how to be faithful  servants of God,  we are not teaching legalism. Those who would charge us with legalism actually want freedom to live their own lives as they see fit.  They do not want any preacher confronting them with their sins. They think that God’s grace gives them freedom to live as they choose and reject the Lordship of Christ.  So they seek a church where the pastor will “tickle their ears”, that is, give them what they want to hear.

II Timothy 4:1-4

A Christian is legalistic if he requires man-made rules to be a good Christian.

Although we do not preach or practice legalism in our church,  there is a place for legalism in our lives.  As American citizens, though free, we are bound by the laws of our land.  We must drive no faster than the legal speed limit or we rightfully risk getting fined.  We must pay our taxes or risk going to jail.  As citizens we are surrounded by laws to protect us and  make life more pleasant for us as those laws restrict evil doers from taking advantage of us.

As loving parents we surround our children with rules about what they can do. Little ones are told what to do and what not to do and they are punished when they disobey.  At the same time we Christian parents should be leading our children to Christ and to the freedom that comes by living under the control of the Holy Spirit.  By the time our children have reached their teens, they should be so strong in the faith that their lives are directed more by God’s Word and by the convicting and leading of  the Holy Spirit, than by parental rules.

In our Christian school our students are surrounded by rules and regulations to enable them to be free to learn.  It is our desire that by the time our students have reached high school,  their lives  should be ruled by God’s Word and by the leading of the Holy Spirit to where they should not have to check the student hand book to see if what they are doing is right or wrong.

A pastor is legalistic if he preaches  man-made rules as the way to become a Christian or as the way to  live the Christian life.  It’s a preacher’s business to avoid legalism and  to declare what the Bible says about sin,  to show God’s way of victory over sin,  to teach  Biblical principles for living the Christian life and to warn of Satan and his strategies for defeating us.  If you want some Biblical information concerning the responsibility of a preacher, I encourage you to read  I and II Thessalonians,  I and II Timothy and  Titus.  These epistles as well as all of Paul’s epistles will help you understand the role and the message of a Biblical pastor.

If your life thus far has been a struggle of trying to please God through your works, I urge you to turn from your self-righteousness and  turn to Christ who alone can make you fit for Heaven.  He alone can change your life and enable you to gain victory over sin.

May God bless you as you seek to live your life under the principles and standards of God’s Word.  May you allow the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin  and enable you to make the necessary changes in your life  so that you can live for Christ and serve Him, bringing glory to Him.  May His Word teach you how to walk in freedom and may He protect you from being burdened down with legalism.

Railroad Track or Ladder

Jesus is speaking to His disciples about stewardship in the first 13 verses of Luke 16. You’ll find those messages under that category on this web site.  In verse 14 we learn that covetous Pharisees who heard Him speak derided Him because they wanted to justify themselves. Jesus responded to them in verse 15.  “Ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”

In this message I want to confront a common misconception that claims Israel, under the Old Covenant, was saved by keeping God’s Law; whereas we today in the church age are saved by the grace of God alone.  The truth is that mankind from the very beginning has always been saved only one way and that is be the grace of God alone.

Noah was saved by God’s grace through faith alone. See Genesis 6:8 and Hebrews 11:7.  Noah showed his faith by building an ark to protect himself from a worldwide flood he had never seen before, but it was God’s grace that saved him.

Abraham was justified by God’s grace through  faith in God by obeying Him and leaving his home in Ur of the Chaldees and moving to a new land that God would give to him and his posterity, the land of Palestine.  See Romans 4:1-4,  Hebrews 11:8-19.

Keep in mind that Noah and Abraham were not saved by keeping God’s Law nor observing ceremonies, such as circumcision.  In the first place, God’s law came 1000 years after Noah  and 430 years after Abraham.

If you’ll take time to read Genesis 12:1-4 you’ll see that Abraham moved in obedience to God when he was 75 years old.  In Genesis 17 you’ll learn that he was circumcised twenty-four years later at the age of 99.  Paul in Romans 4:1-16  and in Galatians 3:6-18 goes to great pains to make it clear that Abraham was saved by grace alone, and not by keeping the law or being circumcised.

True, Abraham and his blood descendants have followed God’s law in being circumcised, as a mark of their national identity.   The Bible teaches that God is far more concerned about the circumcision of our hearts, whether we be male or female, then He is concerned about circumcision of foreskins in males. Deuteronomy 30:1-6 Romans 2:23-29, Colossians 2:8-13 all show God’s concern for circumcision of hearts.

David who lived under the Law of Moses understood that his feeble, failed  attempts to keep God’s Law could never justify him before God. He understood, even back in Old Testament times, that he was justified by God’s grace through faith in Him as he writes about it in Psalm 32.  Paul refers to David’s justification before God in Romans 4:6-8. Of course, Old Testament saints looked forward to the promised Lamb, the Lord Jesus,  who would take away the sins of the world.  In anticipation of that Lamb, they offered the animal sacrifices as taught in the Law of Moses.

Don’t be misled to think that David or any of the godly saints in the Old Testament were legalists.  They were not saved by law keeping.  They were saved by grace alone, just as we are in the church age.  Because of their relationship with God, they loved God’s Law and they obeyed from the heart, just as we today who know Christ, love His Law and are able to live the righteousness of the Law by the power of the Holy Spirit, as shown in Romans 8:1-4.

Read the Psalms as David repeatedly delights in the Law of God.  Those Psalms are just as precious to us in the church age.  We delight in God’s Law just as much as David did; but we, as David, understand that we are justified by God’s grace.

Some have well described God’s Law as a railroad track upon which God meant the trains, Israel in Old Testament times and the Church in our present age to travel down, led by the engine of God’s grace and coupled to that engine by faith.

The legalists: the false teachers of Old Testament times, the Pharisees of Jesus’ day, the Judaizers of Paul’s day, and the religionists of our present day, are all guilty of the folly and the futility of attempting to lift up one end of those railroad tracks and lean them against the gate of Heaven and attempt to climb those tracks as a ladder and gain entrance into Heaven by their own efforts to keep the Law of God.

That’s the basic difference between true Christianity and false religion, regardless of its name.  The true Christian is one who has seen himself as a guilty, lost sinner and who by the grace of God has placed his faith in God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to pay the full penalty for our sins. As a Christian, he accepts the Bible as God’s holy inspired, infallible Word and delights in reading it, hearing it preached and obeying it. He is traveling down the railroad track of God’s Word,  bound for Heaven by the grace of God.

The religionist sees the Law of God as a ladder to Heaven.  He rejects the fact that he is a sinner and in need of a Saviour. Full of pride and self-righteousness, he attempts to climb that ladder and attain Heaven by his own hopelessly inadequate efforts trusting that through his works and through what his church can do for him, he will somehow attain Heaven.  He is bound for Hell. As the Pharisees in Luke 16:15 he rejects and despises Christ and  attempts to justify himself. He is an abomination in the sight of God.

Mis-Branded Legalists

God’s moral Laws, summed up in the Ten Commandments and given to Old Testament Israel, not only taught them God’s holy character and standards for living;  but they also teach us, His Church,  what God expects of us.  Though we are not saved by attempting to obey His Laws, we as Christians delight to please Him by obeying Him, just as a child  delights in pleasing his parents and having their smile of approval.

Not only are His Ten Commandments applicable to us, but II Timothy 3:16 teaches us that all Scripture from Genesis through Revelation is profitable for our learning and application to bring us to spiritual maturity and to prepare us to serve Him.

When we as Christians desire to do what is right in the sight of God, that is not legalism; but love and appreciation for all God means to us.

Consider two wrong uses of God’s Law.

1. Some simply ignore it, falsely thinking that it applies only to Israel and that we Christians who are saved by grace and not by our works, are free to live anyway we choose.  They are quick to brand as legalists, Christians who, in love for Christ, desire to live by God’s moral standards.

They are like the people in Jeremiah’s day who despised God’s Law.  Take time now to read Jeremiah 6:10-20   As you read this passage, note that Israel rejected God’s Law and had no delight in it.  Even the priests and prophets in their covetous desire to please the people, gave them false messages of peace with God, when there was no peace because they had not dealt with their sins.

Note in verse 15 that the people were not ashamed to flaunt God’s laws.  They did not even blush.  That’s exactly the situation today when people who call themselves Christians flaunt God’s Laws, as unmarried couples do; living together in adulterous relationships and thinking nothing of it.  They don’t even blush.

In verse 19 God promises to bring evil upon them because they have rejected His Word.  It wasn’t long before Judah found themselves enslaved in the Babylonian Captivity.

Verse 20 speaks about their so-called worship services that they attempted to offer to God, even while they ignored His Word and lived in sin.  Today we have a generation of Christians who love their feel-good worship services, but who in defiance to God, ignore and avoid any preacher who honestly shows them what the Bible has to say about their sins. Such worship is an abomination to God.

2. Another wrong use of the Law is to attempt to use it as the Pharisees did, by making it a ladder to Heaven.  Those who attempt to please God and achieve Heaven by trying to earn their salvation through law keeping are the true legalists.

God, who has saved sinners by His grace, never meant for sinful man to try to earn his way to Heaven by his feeble, flawed attempts to keep His Law.  That’s why in Jeremiah 31:31-33  God promised a New Covenant.  Whereas the Old Covenant dealt with externals, such as circumcision of the foreskins of  males,  the New Covenant deals with internals.

 Circumcision of heart

In the New Covenant God wrote His Law in the heart.  The fleshly circumcision was replaced by circumcision of hearts of  both males and females.  Read about that in Deuteronomy 30:6  and Colossians 2:9-11.

That circumcision of hearts takes place as Christians expose themselves to the faithful preaching of God’s Word.  As sin is dealt with,  the Holy Spirit convicts us and as we quit making excuses and confess sin as sin;  God forgives and cuts away sin and fleshly desires from our hearts.

What then is God’s purpose of His Law?

Jesus warned in His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:20 that our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees or we will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

The proud, self-righteous Pharisees, vainly attempted to keep God’s law to the letter, including a host of man-made minutia which they had added to make it even more difficult.   Their’s was not a heart obedience from hearts who loved God,  but their’s, according to Matthew 23:23,  was an external attempt to make themselves look good and overlook the things that really matter.

The purpose of God’s Law, according to Galatians 3:24, is to help us come to the end of ourselves, and cast ourselves on God’s mercy and grace, realizing that Christ has fulfilled God’s righteous standards perfectly.  He died for us, paying the full penalty for our sins.  When we trust Him as our Saviour, we are complete in Him according to Colossians 2:9-10.

Let those of us who have trusted Christ for salvation, read God’s Word and place ourselves under the faithful preaching of it, rejoicing in God’s righteous standards. Let us discover the freedom of living the righteousness of the Law under the power of the Holy Spirit, as Romans 8:1-4 teaches us,  and let us not be ashamed to be mis-labeled “legalists” by those who ignore and have no desire to live godly lives.

June 5, 2007 Posted by | Legalism | Comments Off on Freedom from Legalism

America

In 1776 America was born in one of the greatest explosions of freedom in all of history

Our Founding Fathers paid the ultimate price for the freedoms and blessings we enjoy today. The greatest document in all of history,  next to the Bible,  is the Constitution of the United States of America with its republic form of government; with it’s checks and balances in it’s three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial  and with its free elections.  The 1700’s was the time of our childhood with its zeal and excitement. The 1800’s was  the time of our adolescent idealism. The 1900’s was the time of our affluent middle age. About that time the fatal disease of humanism began to destroy us, the disease that makes man his own god. It was during this time that the Bible upon which our nation was founded began to be rejected and become irrelevant. Since that time our nation has rapidly declined as evidenced by our godless modern culture, our rising national debt, racial strife, immorality, abortion and all sorts of crime and political confusion as well as our increasing loss of liberty.

Why are we losing our liberties?

We are losing our liberties to  increasing government bureaucracy and control because we have failed to understand the relationship of liberty and responsibility.
Liberty is earned by assuming responsibility.  An adult who has not learned responsibility soon discovers that his liberties are severely curtailed.  A prisoner has no responsibilities and no freedom.  He has no internal control, so he is controlled externally.

What is that internal control?

CHARACTER!  Character is a quality of life. It affects our personality, attitudes, convictions and life-style.  It results in a person’s basic philosophy of life. Character is the  willingness and the ability to assume responsibility which  results in freedom.

How does character affect the way we live?

1. We keep our word.

2. We  pay our bills on time.

3. We keep our appointments on time.

4. We control our use of credit, never allowing ourselves to go over our head in debt.

5. We work faithfully for our employer, even when other workers are wasting time.

6. Employers pay their employees generously and produce products and services of value.

7. Students do their homework without being coaxed or threatened.

8. Children do their chores without being told.

9. We clean our homes instead of flopping on the couch and watching TV all day.

10. It enables parents to carry out needed discipline, even when they don’t feel like it.

11. It helps us go to church when we would rather stay home and watch TV. or go fishing.

12. It helps us keep our promises.

13. It enables a married couple to stay together, even when their love  grows cold at times.

14. It enables a young couple to be pure on a date, even when the temptation is strong to do wrong.

15. It gives courage to stand publicly for that which is right, even when scorned and ostracized.

16. It give strength to be honest when we are tempted to cheat.

What is true of individuals is also true of nations.  Look at Israel in the Old Testament.  When Israel obeyed God’s Laws, they had freedom under God. When they disobeyed, they lost their freedoms.  The more character  Israel  had, the more internal strength they had and the heathen fled before them. On the other hand, the less character Israel had, the less strength they had and they fled from their enemies.

What gave character to the Founders of our nation and brought about the freedom we enjoy as Americans?

The Pilgrims who came to our shores from England and Europe, brought with them a Biblical philosophy  and life-style. This equipped them for the severe hardships and struggles of founding a new nation.  Their Biblical philosophy was foundational to their lives: personally, economically, socially, politically, and educationally. Every decision was made in the light of the Bible.

Over the next century a surge of immigration brought in a diversified population with no unifying element, except a desire for liberty and opportunity. The Church and State became increasingly separated. At the beginning of the eighteenth century revival fires began to burn all over America as preachers like Jonathan Edwards, George Whitfield,  John and Charles Wesley and others preached God’s Word. God used this to bring about The Great Awakening.  Christian colleges such as Harvard, PrincetonRutgers, Dartmouth, Yale and others were established by Christian leaders of character. Jonathan Edwards, the preacher who preached the famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was the first president of Princeton. These and other schools throughout the land trained the preachers and political leaders who eventually established our  “one nation under God” and produced a generation of citizens who were ready to assume  freedom with its responsibilities.

What has happened to bring America to its moral low today?

The rise of religious liberalism during the nineteenth century and  on into the twentieth century  led people to reject the inspiration and  infallibility of the Bible and with that rejection of God and His moral standards,  there came a growing acceptance of immorality.  Movies and television  have made it increasingly popular and accepted. Humanism invaded our public schools, fathered by Horace Mann and John Dewey.

By 1963 the Bible and prayer were legislated out of the public schools and out of our national life. As a result, our population lost their character and sense of responsibility. We lost our dependence on God and put our dependence on government.

It was no longer, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”  instead it’s “The government is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”  We either choose security by the government or find our security in God.  The only true freedom we can ever know is  freedom under God  A prisoner is totally secure and totally a slave of the penal system.  A lion in the zoo  is totally secure and has no freedom to be what he was born to be. So is the citizen who has learned to depend on the government for his support.

What happens when people lose their character?

1. They gradually lose their freedoms as the government takes over the control of their lives.

2. They lose pride in workmanship.

3. They become sloppy and dirty.

4. They don’t care about others.  They only care about what they can get out of government.

5. They develop an “anything goes” mentality.

6. They cease being truthful and trustworthy.

7. As a nation loses character, it affects the monetary system. Money loses its value. Property,   houses, cars     and other things don’t increase in value.  It only takes more  dollars of less value  to buy them.

8. Music, art and literature are affected by loss of character as beauty is replaced by ugliness.

9. Like the people who rejected God in the book of Judges, we become a lawless society as “every man does     that which is right in his own eyes.”

In the past  50 years I’ve watched with a broken heart as America has slidden down the slide of immorality at an ever-increasing rate of speed.

What is our only hope?

Our hope is not political, nor is it  found in the field of education.   Wall Street and the Federal Reserve System cannot solve our problem.  There is NO HOPE for America apart from turning back to God and to the Bible.  It starts with Christians.  “If MY people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven  and will forgive their sins and heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14  That’s the only answer to the mess we find ourselves in America today.

Christians must take the lead by getting right with God.  When that happens  God will intervene and  restore this nation.    “Righteousness exalteth a nation.  But sin is a reproach to any people.”  Proverbs 14:34  Throughout Old Testament history God gave Israel opportunities to repent. Whenever  they did,  freedom, peace and prosperity were restored.  God can do the same for us.  If we refuse to repent, our nation’s super-power status may  diminish to that of a third world power or into oblivion.

 *******

Heavenly Father, Forgive us Christians for our Laodicean* attitude. Turn us  back to the Bible and back to You. Help us as Christians to lead the way through our life and testimony. Help us to raise up a godly generation of young people who will reclaim this land.  Remove from national, state and local offices those who hate and oppose You and give us godly men and women to lead this nation.  Silence the voices and weaken the influence of those who rise up against You and against Your children.  Help us once more to return to the Bible for direction to guide us as a nation.   Lord Jesus, we look forward to the day when You will return to this earth as King of kings and Lord of lords and begin Your reign of peace and justice over the whole world.  We gladly submit to you right now to be King and Lord of our lives.  Use us to bless America and glorify Your name.   We ask in  Jesus name, Amen. * Revelation 3:14-22

I received most of this information from Dr. Don Howard’s pastor’s training to have an Accelerated Christian Education school in my church back in the early 70’s.

America: Declaration of Independence

For a definition and explanation of liberalism, see my article on this topic in this series.

Liberalism

The great divide in America is not red states vs blue states.  It is not between Democrats and Republicans. Basically it is a conflict between liberal philosophy and conservative philosophy

The conflict between Liberals and Conservatives is more of a spiritual issue than a political issue, although it certainly has political repercussions.  Liberals and Conservatives are found in both major political parties. The word  liberal is a good word.  The word means generous and broadminded.  Proverbs 11:25 states, “The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered himself.”  However, the name liberal has been applied in the religious arena to those who deny the  inspiration and infallibility of the Bible and  the doctrine of Christ. A more accurate name for such would be heretic.

Liberals Worship Their Minds

Liberals consider themselves intellectually superior to Conservatives and they look down on those who believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible Word  of God  as ignorant, simplistic and inferior. Instead of allowing God’s Word to judge their minds,  they judge the Bible by their own minds.  They determine their own moral standards which are directly opposite from the moral standards of the Bible.   That’s why when it comes to moral issues,  Liberals and Conservatives are diametrically opposed to one another.

 What Do Liberals Believe?

Liberals believe  that the Old Testament writers had a warped  understanding of God. They believe these ancient writers saw God as a capricious, vengeful, cruel despot.  Liberals  deny that the writers of both the Old and New Testaments were inspired of God.  They believe that the erroneous thinking of the writers flawed their documents which became part of the Bible.

Liberals reject the deity of Christ,  but they see Jesus as  a good man who had a more enlightened view of God then the Old Testament writers.  Liberals declare  that because of His teachings, Jesus  was rightfully  called the Son of God.   They deny that Jesus is  the virgin born Son of God who lived a sinless life in a human body, then shed His blood on the cross as the final and complete sacrifice for our sins. Instead, they affirm that Jesus died as a martyr for the things He believed and taught.

The Liberal sees God as being so kind and loving that He  overlooks sin.  Liberals reject that God would ever consign anyone to eternal hell.  They teach that everyone is a child of God  and that eventually everyone will be in Heaven.   They say  that it does not matter what you believe;  all roads lead to Heaven.

The religious Liberal picks and chooses what he wants to accept in the Bible.  If something speaks to him it becomes the Word of God to him.  If it seems contrary to human reasoning and science, then he rejects it as myth.  Most Liberals would reject a  universal flood in Noah’s day.  They would reject the miracles of the Bible, including the virgin birth of Christ and His bodily resurrection; concluding that His corpse lies as dust in some tomb.

When Liberals speak of believing in the resurrection of Christ they mean only that Jesus’ spirit rose in the lives of His followers. It’s true that every Christian is indwelt by the Spirit of Christ. The Bible teaches that the slain body of Jesus literally rose again from the dead three days later in a glorified state and is in Heaven today. Jesus is returning in that body to raise us from the dead, to judge His enemies and  bring in His  everlasting Kingdom of righteousness and peace.  All of this is rejected by Liberals.

Liberals reject the creation of man and choose to accept  the evolutionary theory.  They see man as an animal that has evolved to a higher level.  As an animal, they reject the idea of a  human being having a conscience that enables him  to recognize God’s moral standards and know when he has done right or wrong.

Because  Liberals declare there are no absolute moral standards,  but every man has freedom to do whatever he desires;  they welcome the theory of evolution as reason to ignore Almighty God, The Creator;  and reject the moral standards of the Bible.  They reject the fact that all of Adam’s race is born with a sinful nature. They teach that if we just fan the spark  of divine goodness in every man and woman, mankind will continue to evolve and become God-like.  Because of this false premise, it colors their thinking about everything in life.

Whereas the Christian’s view of tolerance is to accept others without agreeing with or sharing their beliefs or lifestyle choices; the liberal’s view of tolerance is to accept the beliefs, values, lifestyles and the truth claims of all as of equal value.

Whereas the Christian’ source of truth, Christ and His Word, the Bible,  are accepted as absolute and final; the liberal’s view of truth is relative. They tell us that truth is “whatever is right for you.”

Whereas the  Christian’s understanding of  right and wrong are determined by the Bible;  the liberal claims that no one has the right to judge another’s views or behaviour as being right or wrong.  Many Christians today have swallowed the liberal’s philosophy that Christians who so judge others are “judgmental”.

How Their Liberal Beliefs Affect Their Positions

Because  Liberals consider the Old Testament  too harsh,  they are generally opposed to the death penalty for capital  offenses.  They are also basically in favor of showing leniency for those who commit crimes.  They are  for lighter sentences.   They argue that the criminal is not at fault alone.  Rather, they blame society for the criminal’s behavior. To Liberals, criminals are not the problem; guns are the problem. They declare that if we remove guns from the people, that crime will decrease.

Because  Liberals are convinced  that man is basically good,  they see no need for a strong military defense.  Instead, they conclude man can bring about world peace through diplomacy alone.

Though most Conservatives care about the environment,  Liberals are more incensed by environmental pollution than by  moral pollution.  Interestingly, the same Liberal who is opposed to the death penalty for murderers is usually for killing unwanted babies by abortion.

How do Liberals Operate?

The Liberal Intelligentsia  promote class warfare. They try to convince the poor and middle class that they are victims of the rich. They see their calling in life to be Robin Hoods; stealing from the rich through excessive taxation to provide government programs for the poor. Instead of solving economic problems, they create  more dependence on government. Many dependants  see themselves as victims of societies inequities and gladly choose those political saviours who offer them the most money and the most security, even it if means less freedom.

Liberals  promote their agenda and increase their power by teaching their religion of humanism and socialism in the public schools and secular universities where they are welcomed with open arms. Through their so called “progressive education” they have brought about the dumbing down of America in the past fifty years. Liberals desperately need  to operate among naive, dependant people who will look to them as saviours.

Basically the difference in strategy between  Conservatives and  Liberals is that  Conservatives use facts and reason to appeal to the intellect, while Liberals appeal to emotions to make their points.

The Fairness Doctrine

The extreme Liberals are Socialists at heart, they are rabid in their desire and efforts to silence all opposition to their views.  When popular conservative talk shows spring up, they are enraged  and attack them furiously with what they call a “Fairness Doctrine”  which is actually an attempt to stifle and control free speech.

By this so-called “Fairness Doctrine” for every hour of Conservative talk on the radio and television, they want equal time to let Liberals give their side.   The foolishness about this is that they already have the freedom and opportunity to use the media as much as they wish.  Who is stopping them from presenting their own side?  Their problem is that few Americans want to listen to their drivel and few businesses want to support them.

Whose talking about fairness?  The Liberals already have control of the public educational system from PreSchool through college. They already control the major new media.  What more can they want but the silencing of Conservatism?

How did they gain that power and control? Through the spiritual blindness of Christians who allowed theological liberalism to take control of  their churches over the past two centuries.  Again, I assert that theological liberalism leads to political liberalism.

What is the Answer to Liberalism?

The only answer to the malaise of Liberalism is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When one finds salvation in Christ, and starts growing in his Christian faith, he is filled with hope and self-confidence as he learns to put his confidence in God.   He no longer sees himself a victim, but as a victor over his circumstances. He develops a work ethic. He loves the Bible and  rejoices in God’s holy standards and in his freedom in Christ.  Because he has found new life and God’s solution to his problems,  he desires to share the Good News with others.

If anyone ever had reason to be a liberal, I did.  I was born into a poor missionary family.  My father died when I was four.  My mother could have taught me how poor we were and how dependent we were on others.   If there had been government relief when I was a child, my mother could have opted for that relief.  Instead of thinking myself a victim and looking for relief from others,  I was taught the value of work and free-enterprise from childhood.

Come to think of it, I never even knew I was poor as a child.  I knew nothing of scholarships or government grants. I worked my way through a Christian high school and Christian college, earning my tuition, room and board.  I say all of this; not to boast, but to encourage you who have had it difficult in life.  By the grace of God,  I came to know Jesus from  early childhood. He has given me the confidence and the enthusiasm to tackle the difficulties of life.

I thank God that Jesus is my Saviour,  my Shepherd, my Provider,  my Lord and my God.  I thank God for the Bible, God’s Word  that shows me how to live.  I thank God for the high privilege of being an American citizen and for the freedom I  have enjoyed all my life.  I thank God for our police officers,  fire fighters, and servicemen and women who are defending and protecting  America with their lives. May God bless and protect them.  May God continue to bless America with the freedom that comes from Him alone  and may we Christians in America see our responsibility to take the Gospel of Christ to those around us and to those in other lands who are bound by  Satan and his lies.
