The Bible is much more than a book of religion.

Prophecy series #25: Marriage Supper of Lamb

To understand the Marriage Supper of the Lamb mentioned in Revelation 19:7-10 we need to be familiar with wedding customs in Bible times.

There were three parts to marriage.

First, the Marriage Contract
This contract was drawn up by the parents of the bride and the parents of the bridegroom. The parents of the bridegroom would pay an agreed amount of money or livestock as a dowry or gift to the parents of the bride. Once this contract was finalized, the couple were betrothed or legally married, but this marriage was not yet consummated by the couple living together. However, from the time the marriage contract was finalized, the marriage could only be dissolved by divorce or death.

This was the legal situation of Mary and Joseph when Joseph discovered that Mary was pregnant before they had come together. Matthew 1:18-25 tells the story. Broken-hearted by her apparent unfaithfulness to him, he was ready to put her away until the angel Gabriel appeared to Joseph and explained to him the supernatural conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary.

After the contract was finalized both bride and groom returned to their separate homes to continue living with their parents while the groom built an addition on to his family's home for himself and his bride.

When the addition was finished, perhaps as much as a year later, the bridegroom with some of his friends would journey in a procession to the home of his bride to take her as his wife back to his home. The bride and her bridesmaids did not know when that glad day would come, but they needed to be ready for the coming of the bridegroom.

When the newly weds with their friends finally arrived at their new home, they went in alone to their new bedroom and consummated the marriage. Now the celebration began with feasting and merriment for several days. This was the Marriage Supper, such as we read about in John 2.

Now let's take these ancient Jewish customs and tie them into prophecy.

We who have put our trust in Christ and been born again by the Spirit of God are the bride of Christ. See Ephesians 5:22-32. The dowry or payment for us was Jesus' own blood shed on the cross for our sins. You and I who have put our trust in Christ are presently the Bride of Christ. Christ is in Heaven preparing a place for us. See John 14:1-3.

As the Jewish girl waited and longed for the coming of her husband to take her to the home he had prepared for her, so we, the bride of Christ, long for the return of Christ our Heavenly Bridegroom who will come someday to take us Home with Him to Heaven to be with Him forever. This step is alluded to in the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13

This is the event referred to in Revelation 19:6-9 as the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

All of this is rather mysterious and difficult for us to fully grasp. I'm not interested in speculating on things that are not clearly revealed. All I know and all that matters to me is that from the moment that we are caught up in our glorified bodies to meet our Saviour in the air, we will forever be with Him.

Will there be food to enjoy at the Marriage Supper? Perhaps, but at this point in time, I don't care. I'm not even interested. Being with Jesus forever is all that matters.

Perhaps the Marriage Supper spoken of in Rev. 19:9 is in someway related to the events that follow in verses 10-21, the Supper of the Great God. This is the supper for the birds as they feast on the dead bodies of the armies that attempt to fight against Christ in the Battle of Armageddon.

Whether there is a connection between the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Revelation 19:7-9 and the Supper of the Great God in verses 11-21, I don't know; but they both seem to be about the same time, so I will finish this article with the Battle of Armageddon.

This is the final battle of sinful man as He attempts to fight against Christ before Christ begins his reign on this earth. I find five references to this battle in the Bible.

Ezekiel 39:17-29 As you read this passage you can't help but see the connection to the passage in Revelation 19:11-21 Note in verse 22 we read that this great event of Christ's victory over His enemies will results in the salvation of Israel. Romans 11 also speaks of the coming salvation of Israel.

Joel 3:9-21 This passage is another prophecy of this final battle of Christ and His enemies which will result in their destruction and the coming peace of the Kingdom Age.

Revelation 14:14-20 Here is a vivid description of the battle when a river of blood will flow from Christ's enemies four or five feet deep for a distance of two hundred miles down through a valley in Israel.

Revelation 16:16-21 names this battle as The Battle of Armageddon. The catastrophic events that follow this battle defy human comprehension.

Revelation 19:11-21 gives us the final description of this awesome battle which will result in the conquest of Anti-Christ and his false prophet who will both be cast alive as the first inhabitants into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone.

One more event will take place before Christ establishes His Kingdom on earth and we will deal with that in the next article.
