Hidden Treasures

The Bible is much more than a book of religion.

What are angels?

They are spirit beings created by God for His glory. Psalm 148:2-5 Colossians 1:16 They worship Him continually. Isaiah 6:1-7

Speaking of angels, the writer of Hebrews in 1:14 declares, "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation"?

Psalm 8:4-5 teaches that we humans are made a little lower than the angels as far as strength and wisdom and glory are concerned. Hebrews 2:7-9 teaches that when Jesus came to this earth as a man, He also as a man was made a little lower than the angels in order to suffer and die for our sins.

When were they created?

The Lord, speaking to Job in Job 38:3-7, tells us that when God created the earth, the morning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted for joy." These sons of God certainly do not refer to human beings who were created after God created the earth. they can only refer to the angels, who were created by God in eternity past.

What do angels do?

1. They worship God continually.

2. They worshipped Jesus, who was God in human flesh. Luke 2:6-15, Hebrews 1:6, Revelation 5:11

3. They ministered to Him on earth. Matthew 4:11. Luke 22:43

4. They carry out God's orders at supernatural speed and with supernatural power. Daniel 9:3-27, Genesis 19, II Samuel 24:15-16, Acts 12:20-23. For example, in II Kings 19:35 we read of one angel who smote 185,000 enemy soldiers in one night.

5. They minister to the needs of God's people and often deliver them from serious accidents or death. Genesis 19:1-16, Psalm 91:11, Daniel 3:28, 6:22, Acts 5:17-19, Matthew 18:10, Hebrews 1:14. Acts 8:26. Acts 27:22-24

6. They were with Jesus at His ascension. Acts 1:11

7. They escort the souls of Christians who have died, to Heaven. Luke 16:22

8. They do not marry. Mark 12:25

Are all angels good?

Angels were created with the ability to choose. Most of the angels God created are holy and sinless. Isaiah 6:1-7 Revelation 5:11-14

Some angels (demons) followed Lucifer, the highest of God's spirit beings, who attempted to usurp God's position and was cast out of heaven. Isaiah 14:12-17 Ezekiel 28:11-28 Those angels who followed him were also cast out of Heaven Jude 6-7 Revelation 12. Some fallen angels took the form of men and had sexual relations with women on earth and produced an extremely wicked and powerful progeny which resulted in God destroying life on earth with a universal flood. Noah and his family were saved by the ark that God had told him to build. Genesis 6:1-8 Those wicked angels are presently locked up in a pit awaiting judgment. Jude 6

Other wicked angels with their leader, Satan, attempt to hinder the work of God and futilely attempt to separate believers from God. I Thessalonians 2:18, Romans 8:38-39

Will Christians judge angels?

The amazing fact is that we will. I Corinthians 6:3

Where is the eternal destination of angels?

Godly angels will share Heaven with Christians.

Ungodly angels (demons) will be cast into the Lake of Fire with all those people who have rejected Christ. Matthew 25:41, Rev. 20:10

Should we worship angels?

Absolutely not! Colossians 2:18

Should we listen to angels if one should speak to us?

Certainly we should not listen to nor heed any angel who would bring us new revelation beyond what the completed Bible has given us. Any further revelation is Satanic and false. Galatians 1:8-9, Revelation 22:18-19

What are Cherubs and Cherubim?

Cherub is singular and cherubim are plural. They are heavenly beings who surround the throne of God. Lucifer (now Satan) was once a covering cherub, perhaps the highest of the cherubim. Ezekiel 28:14 Two cherubim made of beaten gold were fastened to the Ark of the Covenant, the place where God dwelt with Israel. Exodus 25

What are Seraphim?

They are heavenly creatures who are associated with the holiness of God. Isaiah 6:1-7. They are associated with the four living creatures of Revelation 4:6-9

Do human beings who die become angels?

Absolutely not! There is nothing in Scripture to teach such a thing. Human beings remain human beings in Heaven or in Hell. Angels remain angels in Heaven or in Hell Of course, Christians will have glorified, sinless, perfect bodies in Heaven.

I'm reminded of a solo about angels that I used to hear as a boy. It thrilled me when it was sung. It was written by Rev. Johnson Oatman Jr. Let me share it with you.

There is singing up in Heaven such as we have never known,
Where the angels sing the praises of the Lamb upon the throne:
Their sweet harps are ever tuneful and their voices always clear,
Oh, that we might be more like them while we serve the Master here.

But I hear another anthem, blending voices clear and strong,
"Unto Him who hath redeemed us and hath bought us," is the song;
We have come through tribulations to this land so fair and bright,
In the fountain freely flowing, He hath made our garments white.

Then the angels stand and listen, for they cannot join that song,
Like the sound of many waters, by that happy blood-washed throng;
For they sing about great trials, battles fought and victories won,
And they praise their great Redeemer, who hath said to them, "Well done."

So, although I'm not an angel, yet I know that over there
I will join a blessed chorus that the angels cannot share;
I will sing about my Saviour who upon dark Calvary
Freely pardoned my transgressions, died to set a sinner free.

Holy, holy, is what the angels sing,
And I expect to help them make the courts of Heaven ring;
But when I sing redemption's story, they will fold their wings,
For angels never felt the joy that our salvation brings.
